Best Truck Topper: How to Pick One That Fits the Way You Drive

Best Truck Topper: How to Pick One That Fits the Way You Drive

If you're searching for the best truck topper, the honest answer is that it depends on how you use your truck, not which name is on the topper. A topper that's great for a daily commuter can be the wrong pick for someone who hauls gear every weekend. Before you buy, it helps to run through a short checklist: fit, roof load, sides, and install. We build two aluminum series, Panorama and Forge, and this is how we'd walk you through picking between them.

Start with how you use the bed, not the topper

A topper that locks up a daily driver's cargo needs different things than one that carries gear on an overland trip. If you drive the truck every day and want a bright bed with a dog or kids riding along, you want glass and airflow. If you haul tools, recovery boards, or bags that need to sit outside the cab, you want sides you can mount gear on. Write down what actually rides in your bed most weeks. That answer points you to a series faster than any spec sheet.

Check your truck's year and bed length first

This sounds basic, but it's where people get stuck. For the Toyota Tacoma, we cut toppers for 2016-2023 and 2024+ trucks, in both 5 ft and 6 ft beds, and that's also the most common search we see from Tacoma owners looking for the best camper shell for Tacoma. One detail worth knowing if you're comparing series on a Tacoma: Panorama is cut for all four of those configurations, 5 ft and 6 ft, both year ranges. Forge is only cut for the 5 ft bed on both year ranges, not the 6 ft. If you've got the longer bed and want Forge's MOLLE sides, check fitment before you fall in love with the look.

Glass for everyday driving, MOLLE panels for gear

Our Panorama topper runs tinted tempered glass on all four sides, with the two side windows and the front window sliding open. The roofline sits low and follows the cab, so it doesn't look like a box bolted onto a nice truck. It's the pick for a daily driver: light in the bed, air for a dog riding back there, and everything still locks up. Our Forge topper swaps the sides for aluminum panels with removable MOLLE, so you can mount tools, recovery boards, or bags on the outside, then pull the panels off later for flat sides. Front and rear stay glass, with a sliding front window. Both series share the same frame, three gull-wing doors on gas struts, and 6 keys that work every lock on the topper.

Think about what the roof needs to carry

If you're planning to run a rooftop tent, a loading platform, or just cross bars for long gear, check the roof numbers before you buy anything. Both series have T-slot rails built into the roof, rated for 350 lb dynamic load and 650 lb static load. That's the number that matters if a rooftop tent is part of the plan: static load is what the rails hold while the truck is parked. If you're adding anything beyond bars, it's worth browsing our accessories page before you commit to a series.

Installation, locks, and the warranty

Both toppers bolt on in 20-30 minutes with no drilling into the bed, and they come off again if you need the open bed back for a job. Every door locks, all three of them, with 6 keys in the box. We back both series with a 12-month limited warranty, and you'll want to register within 30 days of buying. Full terms are on our warranty page.

Once you know which series fits how you drive, the fastest way to get a real number is to pull up your truck on our home page and use the truck finder, or head to the Toyota Tacoma page if that's what you're driving. We're in Englewood, Colorado, and you're welcome to come look at both series in person before you decide.
